Tonification and Sedation techniques Flashcards
Tonification =
Bu
Sedation =
Xie
How many Tonification and Sedation techniques are there and what are they ?
- Rotating
- Lifting and Thrusting
- Insert with the Breath
- Insert and withdrawal Speed
- Open/Close the hole
- Needle tip direction
Clarify b/w Tonification and Sedation using the Rotating technique ?
Bu (tonify): Toward the HT (clockwise)
Xie (sedate): Away from the HT (counter-clockwise)
Clarify b/w tonification and sedation using the Lifting and Thrusting technique ?
Bu: emphasize thrust
Xie: emphasize lift
Clarify b/w tonifcation and sedation using the Insert with the Breath technique ?
Bu: insert on exhale
Xie: insert on inhale
Clarify b/w tonifcation and sedation using the Insert and withdrawal speed technique ?
Bu: insert slowly, withdrawal quickly
Xie: insert quickly, withdrawal slowly
Clarify b/w tonification and sedation using the Open/Close the hole technique ?
Bu: close the hole
Xie: open the hole
Clarify b/w tonifcation and sedation using the Needle Tip Direction technique ?
Bu: pointing in the direction of qi flow
Xie: pointing against the qi flow
Why should you rotate the needle both ways ?
because rotating in only one directions can cause the muscle to bind to the needle.
Always load the guide tube with the ___ side down.
Handle (so you don’t dull or cross the needle)
Other forms of needle manipulation:
- Flicking (flick the needle gently to cause vibration when there is a slow arrival of qi)
- Scraping (hold the shaft with a cotton ball at the top of the handle, scrape the handle to increase dispersion of qi)
- Shaking (increases qi sensation)
- Flying (rotate 3 times rapidly separate fingers like a bird spreading its wings to increase qi sensations)
- Vibrating (lift and thrust with a very small amplitude to increase the qi sensation)
