tongue muscles Flashcards
Vertical
intrinsic muscle- fibers align vertically, contraction of the muscle flattens the tongue body, innervated by CN XII- hypoglossal
interdigitated tongue muscles (2)
vertical and transverse
transverse
intrinsic, fibers align horizontally, contraction of muscle narrows and elongates the tongue body, innervated by CN XII- hypoglossal
superior longitudinal
intrinsic, fibers that align along length of tongue, contraction of muscle shortens tongue body and pulls tip forward, innervated by CN XII- hypoglossal
inferior longitudinal
intrinsic, fibers that align along length of tongue, contraction of muscle shortens tongue body and pulls tip downward, innervated by CN XII- hypoglossal
hyoglossus
extrinsic, contraction causes lingual retraction and depresses tongue, courses tongue and hyoid bone, innervated by CN XII- hypoglossal
genioglossus
extrinsic, Contraction of posterior portion of the muscle causes lingual protrusion, contraction of the anterior portion of the tongue causes lingual retraction, and contraction of all fibers causes lingual depression, courses mandible to hyoid bone and tongue, innervated by CN XII hypoglossal
palatoglossus
extrinsic, contraction causes lingual retraction and elevates the tongue , courses tongue and soft palate, innervated by Pharyngeal Plexus (CN IX and X, glossopharyngeal and vagus- pharyngeal branch)
styloglossus
extrinsic, contraction causes lingual retraction (and elevation), courses tongue and styloid process, innervated by CN XII- hypoglossal
