Tommy Science - Cells Flashcards
What is a cell?
The smallest unit of life
Microscopic
Who is made up of cells?
Some animals are made up of one cell
Others are made of trillions and trillions of cells
What are the basic needs of cells?
Take in oxygen Make food Remove waste Respond to change in environment Grow Reproduce
Cell parts
Cells are made up of different parts, each part has job to do
What is the cell membranes job?
It is like a skin of a cell All cells have one Protects cell Lets in oxygen and water Allows waste materials to leave
What is mitochondria ?
Combines oxygen and food to make energy
What are the vacuoles?
Stores and breaks down materials
What is the nucleus?
Controls center of the cell
Inside our chromosomes
What are chromosomes?
Instructions for the cell ( what the cells job is/ how to do it) blue prints
What is DNA?
Shaped like double helix ( twisted ladder)
Chemical molecules that make chromosomes
46 chromosomes in people (23 from mom 23 from dad)
Genes
In chromosome and part of DNA
Include info. that makes us who we are - traits of hair and eye color, height, curly hair)
You have 50,000 different genes
What is an organ system?
Is two or more organs that work together to help your body perform an important job
What are organs made of?
Tissue
What are tissues made of
Cells
Two examples of organ systems
Nervous and skeletal systems
What is the skeletal system’s Jon and how it helps the body function?
A skeletal system is a major organ system in the human body. It is made out of 206 bones. It provides a frame for all the muscles, protects internal organs and allows us to move around
What are the four different types of cells
Muscle
Bone
Hair
Nail
What are neurons?
Are cells that make up the nervous system
What is the neurons job?
Relay information from brain to body and body to brain
Want are the three parts of a neuron?
Dendrites
Cell body
Axon
What is the job of the red blood cell
To carry oxygen through the body
How are red blood cells shaped?
Round cells
Ways the shape of red blood cells help it to do it’s job
Little indentations create more surface area so it can carry more oxygen
Smoothness allows them to glide easily through the blood vessels
What is tissue
A bunch of non visible cells that are formed together to be visible so that they can do a job
