Tommy Heart Flashcards
Purpose of the cardiovascular system
Move nutrients and oxygen rich blood through the different organs
What are the different parts of the cardiovascular system?
Heart Blood Blood vessels Veins Arteries Capillaries
Components of blood
Plasma
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
Plasma?
Is by volume the greatest component of your blood
Mostly water
Red blood cells
Carry oxygen to all of the other cells in your body
White blood cells
Protects your body from germs and diseases
Carry oxygen and carbon dioxide
Smooth shaped disc
Platelets
They form together to protect the cut, form a clot
Tiny pics of cell
What are blood vessels
The transportation system of the blood
Three types of vessels
Arteries
Veins
Capillaries
What do arteries do?
Red
Carry blood away from heart
Branch into small tubes (capillaries)
bigger than blood vessel
Veins
Have valves that keep blood flowing in one direction
Carry blood to the heart
Veins and arteries
Both are tubes
Circulate blood through the body
Part of the cardiovascular system
What are the two parts of the respiratory system?
2 lungs, trachea, bronchioles, alveoli (tiny air sacs) diaphragm
How does the diaphragm help breathing
It’s a large muscle that expands and contracts to help us breathe
Inhale-contract
Exhale-retract
Common illness of lungs
Bronchitis bronchioles are inflamed from virus or bacteria
