Tolerance Flashcards
What is tolerance
Tolerance is the ability of living organisms to withstand or tolerate little unfavourable changes in the environment which affect their survival
What is tolerance range
It is the range between the minimum and maximum limits to which organisms can tolerate certain changes in their environment so as to survive
What occurs beyond the tolerance range
Death
What is geographical range
Geographical range refers to the areas where a species of organism can only be found within the minimum and maximum limits of its tolerance.
What is Adaptation
It is the ability of an organism to live successfully in a particular habitat as a result of its structure, appearance and behaviour
Adaptation of Fish
- Possession of streamlined body for easy movement in water eg Tilapia fish
- Possession of fins for movement.
- Possession of gills for gaseous exchange.
- Possession of tail for swimming.
- Possession of swim bladder for the purpose of buoyancy in water.
Adaptation of Toad
- The tongue is long and sticky to help hold prey.
- The skin is slimy with mucous gland which makes the animal difficult to be caught by predators
- Absence of tail facilitates hopping or jumping movement
- The colour can be altered to match the type of background.
What is a social insect
Social insect is any of numerous species of insects that live in colonies
What characteristics do social insects manifest
Groupintegration, division of labour, and overlap of generations.
What insects best exemplify social insects
Social insects are best exemplified by alltermitesand ants and various bees and wasps.
Importance of social insects
They drive ecosystem processes such as pollination (bees, wasps), predation (ants, wasps), soil turnover (termites, ants), seed dispersal(ants), and decomposition (termites)
