review of 3 studies into effectiveness found limited impact on management of SZ patients, only 1 study found improvement in symptoms, no positive change in maladaptive behaviour, operant conditioning not most effective method, casts doubt on effectiveness, lowers validity of TE as management technique
weakness: Ethical issues
privileges more available to those with milder symptoms, less to those w severe symptoms, TE suggests symptoms bypassed by seeking reward, discriminates against severely ill, symptoms prevent accessing this technique, reduced use of TE as not appropriate for all patients
weakness: no longer term impact on behaviour change
more effective in institutional care, when sent home patients lose structure they had to help manage behaviour, questions appropriateness and effectiveness as high chance of relapse when given independence
