drug therapy Flashcards
strength: ETS THORNLEY ET AL// MELTZER
TEA- meta analysis 13 studies, 1121 ppts, chlorpromazine against placebo, typical associated with better overall functioning and reduced symptom severity. MELTZER- clozapine, more affective than typical, 30-50% treatment resistant cases, inc validity
strength: little motivation
takes a tablet to reduce symptoms, CBT requires motivation to attend and engage with sessions, identify and challenge, SZ patients no accurate perception of reality// avolition, more appropriate as more accessible across symptoms
weakness: negative side effects
chlorpromazine can cause parkinsonism, clozapine carry risk of life threatening illness ageanulocytosis (reduced WBC count), CBT doesn’t involve use of drugs, no side effects, not appropriate as patients may stop taking them
weakness: ethical issues
antipsychotics used to calm patients in hospitals, make easier for staff to work, benefits staff rather than patient, human rights abuse, can’t give full informed consent, not ethical as used for ward management rather than treatment
