reliability and validity in classification Flashcards
weakness: symptom overlap
two or more conditions share similar symptoms, SZ and DEP both have avolition, questions R and V as may be diagnosed with wrong disorder, may be diagnosing wrong, won’t receive appropriate treatment, negatively affects accuracy and consistency
weakness: co-morbidity
two illnesses occur at same time, BUCKLEY ET ALL 50% SZ patients also have depression, 23% have both SZ and OCD, not diagnosing correctly so not treating appropriately, negatively affects accuracy and consistency
weakness: gender bias
1980’s men diagnosed with SZ more often than women, men more genetically vulnerable, females function better (work , relationships) symptoms may be masked, women who share symptoms may not be diagnosed as symptoms seem mild
weakness: culture bias
english people of african origin more likely to be diagnosed, voices from ancestors seen as positive symptom in UK, ten times more likely to revive diagnosis if living in UK compared to white brits, persons culture impacting diagnosis
