Carcinogen
A substance or agent that causes cancer.
Carbon monoxide
A poisonous, colorless, odorless gas produced when substance are burned.
Chewing tobacco
Leaves of poor quality tobacco mixed with molasses or honey, placed between the cheek and gums.
Nicotine
The drug in tobacco that may act as a stimulant and cause addiction.
Nicotine withdrawal
A reaction to the lack of nicotine in the body.
Smokeless tobacco
A form of tobacco that is chewed or sniffed.
Snuff
Finely ground tobacco that may be either sniffed through the nose or held between the lower lip and teeth.
Stimulant
A drug that speeds up the activities of the central nervous system, the heart and other organs.
Tar
The dark, sticky mixture of chemicals that is formed when tobacco burns.
Chronic bronchitis
A condition in which the bronchial tubes are swollen and clogged with mucus.
Emphysema
A breathing disorder in which the small air sacs in the lungs lose their ability to expand and contract.
Leukoplakia
Hard, white leathery patches or sores that form on the inside of the mouth and may develop into cancer and is caused by smokeless.
Mainstream smoke
Tobacco that a smoke inhales into the lungs and then exhales into the air.
Oral cancer
Cancer of the mouth, throat or tongue.
Passive smokers
A smoker who involuntarily breathes side stream smoke.
