Carbohydrates
A class of nutrients that includes sugars and starches.
Calories
Units used to measure the amount of energy released when nutritions are burned.
Cholesterol
A waxy, fat like substance found in the cells of all animals.
Fats
The class of nutrients with the highest energy content.
Fiber
The indigestible material found in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and seeds that is necessary for the proper functioning of the digestive system.
Glucose
A simple sugar that is the major provider of energy for the body’s cells.
Metabolism
The chemical process by which the body breaks down food to obtain energy.
Minerals
One of a class of a nutrients that are not made up of living things and required only in small amounts.
Nutrients
A substance found in food that the body needs to regulate bodily functions, promote growth, repair body tissues, and obtain energy.
Proteins
The class of nutrients that contains nitrogen as well as carbon.
Saturated fat
A fat that contains as many hydrogen atoms in its structure as is possible chemically.
Unsaturated fat
A fat that contains fewer than maximum possible number of hydrogen atoms in its structure.
Vitamins
One of a class of nutrients that are made up by living things and are required only in small amounts, and assist many chemical reactions in the body.
Daily values
A recommendation for the amounts of a specific nutrient that average person should obtain each day.
Nutrients density
The proportion of nutrients in a food compared to the number of calories.
