Social hierarchy is a ranking system of people. Think about your CASTE SYSTEMS from history - - the people at the top will get more respect that those at the bottom.

Jem feels that the social hierarchy in Maycomb is based on how long an individual has been able to read - - so those like the Finches are on the top and the Ewell’s and Robinson’s (Black families) are on the bottom.
