Even though Jerry says he does not know why he refused to sell chocolates, we can see a few influences at work; Greg Bailey, Jerry’s dad, and the Hippie in the Commons all play a role in Jerry’s decision not to sell. Explain how Jerry’s mother’s death contributes to the decision. From Jerry’s sub-conscience, explain why he refused to sell chocolate.
- Jerry’s questioning life
- His mom’s death robbed him of understanding and he wants answers
- Hippie raises the first question: Is Jerry living an examined life? Square boy - Jerry never challenges the rules. So Jerry is going to break out of the box.
- Sees his dad as a failure/settled on a career and sees the same in himself and promises not to be like him.
- Think how George Bailey stood up for himself. He is not a failure according to Jerry. Jerry wants to be more like George.
- The desire to stand up for yourself is what causes Jerry to refuse to sell Chocolate.
Compare and Contrast Archie Costello and Emile Janza’s styles of bullying. Which one is more effective? Why? Give examples to support your argument.
Both: Bullies, both are feared
Emile: Controls with physical dominance (beating up Jerry). Likes confrontation and violence.
Archie: Won’t physically harm someone. Psychological torment of people. He wants to control and manipulate. Blackmails Emile
Archie is more effective. People should be more afraid of Archie.
