Propaganda is the spreading of information (can be facts, rumors, half-truths and lies) to influence public opinion.
Brother Leon and The Vigils use propaganda to get support for the chocolate sale and to demonize Jerry. Brother Leon lies about the sales totals, name-calls and plays on the boys’ sense of belonging to the group to get them to get involved in the chocolate sale. The Vigils us the third party technique to make the sale “cool” to the students
What is conformity?
Is Jerry a conformist?
Why or why not
Conformity is compliance with standards, rules or laws - or the behaving in a manner that is socially accepted. Jerry is a conformist at the beginning because he doesn’t question anything or challenges anyone.
He does what he is told. But once he begins refusing the chocolates he becomes a nonconformist. He remains this way until he’s beaten up by Emile Janza at the end of the book. He tells Goober not to disturb the universe and becomes a conformist.
Describe Goober’s reaction to learning that he is credited with 50 boxes sold. Why does he have this reaction?
He becomes distraught and begins to cry. He had quit selling after his 27 box in support of Jerry. At this moment he realizes that Jerry is up against something larger than both of them - - he begins to feel hopeless

How does the opening scene on the football field foreshadow Jerry’s downfall?
The first words are - “They murdered him” Jerry is then violently thrown around during football tryouts - and eventually admitting that he does not want to play - but then he get some approval from the coach and becomes determined to make the team. Obie sees that the goalpost looks like a cross and that since Jerry is tough his “death” might have greater meaning
Why do we read tragic literature?
What is catharsis? How is tragic literature cathartic?
We read it as a way to process and release the feelings that it brings: doubt, shame, despair, loss
Catharsis is the process of indulging in these emotions so that we can release them.
Tragic literature gives us a healthy way to experience and process these feeling, which in turn give us a healthier perspective of the world.
