Q

Who comes on the stand after the first person? What are they asked, what revelations are made?

A

Bob Ewell. Bob Ewell says that when he came in from the woods, he heard Mayella’s scream, and he saw Tom with Mayella at the window. Atticus asks Bob to write his name on a paper. He writes it with his left hand.

17
Q

Who comes third to the stand? What are they asked, what revelations are made?

A

Mayella. Mayella gives her account of the story. She was sitting on the porch when Tom came. She wanted him to bust up the chiffarobe for a nickel. When she went to get him the nickel, he was on her, and he hit her. Atticus asks if Bob treats Mayella well. She says tolerable, he says except when he’s drinking. Mayella says that Bob’s never beat her. Mayella says that it was the first time Tom came over the fence. Mayella is wishy-washy through the whole trial. Atticus throws a glass to Tom. Tom catches it with his right hand. He has no function left in his left, meaning he could not have done the beating. Mayella goes on a spirited rant about cowardice.

18
Q

Who comes on the stand fourth? What are they asked, what revelations are made.

A

Tom Robinson is brought to the stand. He remains calm, composed, and honest. He says he busted up the chifferobe just as Mayella said, however, that was a year ago. He says the went on the field many times because Mayella always had a job for him to do. He said that on August 21st, he was going home, Mayella asked him to help, however, he saw nothing to work on. She said for him to come in and fix a door, but the door was fine. She shut the door, Tom realised the kids were gone, and she said she sent them for ice cream. She grabbed him and started making advances at him and kissed him. The trial then gets doomed because he said that he felt bad for her.

19
Q

What is the end result of the trial? Why is the jury deliberation better for Atticus?

A

Tom Robinson is charged guilty. However, every second there is a holdout from the jury, the more equality wins.

20
Q

What most likely happened to Mayella?

A

In a fit of drunken rage, Bob beat her.

21
Q

What does the sherriff tell Atticus after the trial?

A

Tom Robinson got shot dead.

22
Q

What do we see happen to Jem and Scout throughout the story?

A

They mature. Ex. Jem says to Atticus that he will go with him to break the news to the Robinsons.

23
Q

What happens to Jem and Scout on Halloween?

A

Jem and Scout take a shortcut home, which takes them through the forest. Suddenly, they are attacked. Jem is knocked unconcious, and Scout is knocked over. She is protected by her ham outfit. Suddenly, another man comes and begins fighting with each other.

24
Q

What does Scout find out happened in the woods?

A

Arthur “Boo” Radley stopped the kids from being attacked by a drunk Bob Ewell. Jem was carried to the house by Boo.

25
Q

What does the sherriff think happened in the woods? What does Atticus think? How does the sherriff decide to resolve the situation?

A

Atticus thinks that Jem stabbed Bob in self-defense. The sherriff thinks that Boo did it to protect the kids. The sherrif thinks that since everyone had been fed up with the actions of Bob Ewell, bringing Boo to the limelight as the children’s saviour would only confuse and damage him. They decide to spin the story that in his drunkeness, Bob Ewell fell on his knife.

26
Q

What does Scout liken protecting Boo to?

A

Atticus said that, you can never kill a mockingbird because all they do is sing and create pretty music. Scout thinks that not protecting Boo would be like killing a mockingbird, as he is too innocent.

27
Q

Who are the mockingbirds in the story?

A

Tom Robinson

Arthur “Boo” Radley

28
Q

Why is Atticus a hero?

A

Atticus is a hero because he is the most moral, and also he does what others will not. Atticus shows us time and time again, that we should not judge others, and do what we can to help them. Scout says that Atticus said “ You will never know a man, until you walk around in his shoes.” Atticus also does things that others won’t. He does not want to shoot the dog, but since nobody else can do it, he has to do it. He just wants to set a good example for his kids.
