A
He is a merchant of trade who has his financial interests tied up in overseas shipments (when the play begins). He also lends out money without interest to those ask for it.

Who is Bassanio?
A
Bassanio is Antonio’s closest FRIEND and has been in debt for many years, and is the most in debt to Antonio. He decides to borrow more money from Antonio and plans on using it to become an eligible suitor for Portia.
