Q

Hobbit:

“There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself.”
Who says this? To whom? Why? And … what does the speaker really mean?

A

Said by Gandalf
Said to the Dwarves and Bilbo

He is saying that Bilbo may not seem to be strong or adventurous but there was a reason Gandalf chose him. Gandalf says there is more to Bilbo than what meets the eye. He is also saying that Bilbo is a lot more than what he thinks about himself. He wants Bilbo to believe in himself.

Q

Hobbit:

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world”

A

Said by Thorin
Said to Bilbo

I think it shows that Thorin is truly sorry for his actions and deeds and it should be considered as a redemption since Thorin is relatively a good person and he would never mean to harm anyone and he was just hypnotized by the gold. He apologizes for his last conversation with Bilbo and I think that since he is a relatively good person, his previous actions should not be held against him.

Merchant of Venice

“… thou meager lead,
Which rather threat’nest than dost promise aught
Thy paleness moves me more than eloquence…”

A

Said by Bassanio
An Aside

He is saying that the simplicity of the lead attracts him more than the eloquence and beauty of the gold and silver. This is why he chooses the lead. He is not persuaded by the outward appearance and rather he is thinking of what is in the lead casket.

“The villainy you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction” (3.1.56-7)

A

Said by Shylock
Said to Salerino & Solario

He is saying that all the hurtful things the Christians have done to him, he has learned from, and he will do the same to Antonio but he will go stronger and hurt Antonio more than himself was hurt. This line was the end of Shylock’s “I am a Jew” speech. He explains that he will take revenge on Antonio and Antonio will get back everything he did to Shylock but worse.

The Jew shall have all justice;…
He shall have nothing but the penalty.”

A

Said by Portia
Said to Bassanio and everyone in the courtroom

Portia wants Shylock to go through with the contract so he will end up getting into trouble since the contract doesn’t say anything about blood. He is only supposed to take flesh or else he will die. Portia wants to make sure Shylock doesn’t get what he wants.

Q

1984

Thoughtcrime does not entail death: Thoughtcrime IS death.” (pg. 113)

A

Thought by Winston

The point is that once you have committed thoughtcrime, you are the dead. It is inevitable that you will die. Once you have committed thoughtcrime, you are the undead. In this society, the government is very strict on the thoughts of the citizens. If they think of something they are not supposed to be thinking of, they will be punished.

“Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two makes four. If that is granted, all else follows”

A

Written by Winston in his diary.

Winston is saying that freedom is the ability to say and think what you want without being punished. If this freedom is given to them by the government, then other freedoms follow. Once one freedom is given, it becomes easier for others to be given.

“Oranges and lemons say the bells of St. Clement’s,
You owe me three farthings say the bells of St. Martin’s.
When will you pay me say the bells of Old Bailey,
When I grow rich say the bells of Shoreditch.
Here comes a candle to light you to bed,
Here comes a chopper to chop off your head.”

A

This is the rhyme that Winston keeps trying to remember.

Q

1984

“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”

A

Party Slogan

Working at the Ministry of Truth, Winston knows that the Inner and Outer Party that controls what happens now have the power to change what happened in the past. They can’t physically change it but they can alter what people think happened. Since we know that whoever controls the present, controls the past, we know that the Inner and Outer Party controls the present and therefore the past. Ergo, the Inner and Outer Party controls the future. They have the power to make decisions now that will change what happens in the future. This quote, in most simplistic forms means that the Inner and Outer Party has the ability to change what happens in the future, present, and past.

The future is based off of the past lies. You control the past to perpetuate the past lies onto the future.

Q

1984

“The primary aim of modern warfare is to use up the products of the machine without raising the general standard of living.”

A

Said in Ch 3 of The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism (Goldstein’s Book)

Essentially, the purpose of war is to use up the money they have in a way that they don’t make their citizen’s lives better. This way they can still use up money but people are still living the same way.

Q

1984

“And perhaps you might pretend, afterwards, that it was only a trick and that you just said it to make them stop and didn’t really mean it. But that isn’t true. At the time when it happens you do mean it. You think there’s no other way of saving yourself and you’re quite ready to save yourself that way. You want it to happen to the other person. You don’t give a damn what they suffer. All you care about is yourself.”

A

Said by Julia
Said to Winston

She was talking about the betrayal in the Ministry of Love. She says that they’re betrayal was so real, that there is no way they could look each other in the eyes.

Q

TKM

“Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it.
“Your father’s right,” she said. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

A

Said by Atticus and Calpurnia
Said to Scout

In this passage, they talk about how mockingbirds should never be killed since they only make beautiful music for people to enjoy. Tom Robinson is a mockingbird since he only helps out Mayella Ewell when she needs something fixed, but he is being charged for doing something he never did. They are shooting (charging) the mockingbird (Tom Robinson) without having any reason to.

A

Said by Scout and Atticus
Said in narration

Scout is referring to Boo Radley in this quote/passage. The townspeople make judgements about Boo, without actually knowing him. However, Scout realises that she can only understand Boo once she spends time in his shoes. Then she can finally understand what he is going through.
