How big is the coffee industry?

A

The sale of coffee is a $42.5 billion industry and continues to grow. Around 25 million small producers rely on coffee for a living. There are 49 coffee producing nations.

It is the most traded commodity.

Which countries produce our coffee?

A

South and Central America produce the bulk of coffee. Colombia alone produces 15% of all coffee. Due to the processing required most producers cannot afford the finished product. It is highly dependent upon climate - some years 10X more coffee is produced than the previous year.

A

Established in 1976. Single product up until 2002. Now sells a wide range of technology products.

Who buys Apple products?

A

Apple products are almost exclusively sold in HICs with 44% of sales in the USA. There are lots of stores in these countries. Apple don’t bother to market their products in LICs as they are unaffordable to the majority.

Where are Apple products manufactured?

A

Primarily in developing countries, moving away from China into countries with even cheaper labour like Taiwan. Now in China only the more advanced manufacturing takes place.

A

Provide a large number of retail jobs in stores.

4000 workers in Cork employed to produce iMacs. Further 2500 in supply chain.
