What are the aims of the UN?
To maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relationships between nations and promote human rights.
Who funds th UN?
The USA provides over 25% of funding, China and Japan both provide 10% and the rest is mainly from other developed nations. Per capita Norway provides the most funding at $400 per capita - 8X that of the USA.
What are the benefits of UN involvement?
Helps to prevent war and conflict - 40% decline in conflict since the 1990s.
Supports 222 projects in 22 countries.
UNICEF works in 150 countries and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965.
What are the negatives of UN involvement?
Sometimes the execution of UN actions has been poor. For example UN aid workers caused a cholera outbreak in Haiti which killed 10,000. Too few UN peacekeepers were sent to Rwanda resulting in the genocide continuing longer than it had to.
