How does the World Bank differ from the IMF?
The World Bank aims to reduce poverty whereas the IMF aims chiefly to stabilise exchange rates.
Give an example of one top down project and one bottom up project funded by the World Bank.
Top down: Bangladesh Sustainable Fisheries Project. This aimed to increase the fisheries economic productivity; $240 million was given.
Bottom up: Displaced Persons and Border Communities Project. Aimed to improve livelihoods for displaced people; $20 million was given.
What are the benefits of World Bank involvement?
Provides key aid during crises.
Can help start up businesses in developing countries.
What are the negatives of World Bank involvement?
Any money received must eventually be paid back.
Over the last 10 years 3.4 million people have been displaced as a result of the World Bank.
