TMJ Flashcards
Articular Surfaces
Condyle
Articular eminence
Mandubular fossa
Superior attachment of the capsule
(surrounds the mandibular fossa)
Anteriorly attaches to the articular eminence.
Posteriorly attaches to squamotympatic fissure
Inferior attachment of the capsule
attaches to neck of condyle
What is the Temporomandibular ligament?
a thick part of the capsule that forms the lateral ligament.
Prevents post and inferior displacement.
Stylomandibular ligament attachment
styloid process to angle of mandible
Spenomandibular ligament attachment
spine of sphenoid to lingula of mandible
Attachments of the disc to the capsule is via
superior and inferior sheets or lamellae
Lateral Attachments of the disc to the capsule
the disc attaches directly to the capsule
Posterior Attachments of the disc to the capsule
lamella split.
Superiorly it inserts into the squamotympanic fissure. (Discomalleolar (Pinto’s) Ligament)
Inferiorly it attaches to the neck of the condyle. The split encloses the retrodiscal space – loose vascular
connective tissue
Anterior Attachments of the disc to the capsule
the disc attaches to the fibers of the capsule which in turn attach to the articular eminence superiorly and condyle head inferiorly
