TMJ Flashcards
What kind of joint is the tooth socket?
gomphosis
What kind of cartilaginous joint has direct apposition of bone and cartilage?
Synchondroses
What joint has fibrous tissue internally in the joint?
Secondary cartilaginous joint - or Symphyses
Specifically, what kind of joint is the TMJ?
synovial sliding-ginglymoid joint
What two ‘articulating’ bones make the TMJ?
Condyle of mandible and Glenoid fossa of temporal bone
What anteriorly borders the glenoid fossa where the condyle positions during jaw articulation?
Articular eminence
What is the general structure of the TMJ?
An upper and lower cavities separated by an articular disc, which is continuous with the synovial capsule
What forms the primitive TMJ before birth?
the incus and malleus, which are formed from meckel’s cartilage
Instead of cartilage, what covers the articular surfaces of the bones in the TMJ?
fibrous connective tissue
What is the lamina splendens?
The fibrous CT covering the condyle (mostly avascular, Type I collagen)
What has a thicker fibrous covering, the articular eminence or the glenoid fossa?
articular eminence because it has to withstand a lifetime’s worth of jaw flapping
Cartilage within the condylar head serves what purpose?
It can undergo endochondral ossification to maybe accommodate for wear
The mandible is formed by what type of bone formation?
Intramembranous ossification
Why are chondroblasts in the condyle?
To form cartilage that can later be ossified
What does the temporomandibular ligament do?
restricts lateral and medial movement when the joint articulates
