Titration Flashcards

1
Q

What is titration

A
  • used to work out the concentration of an unknown solution when you know the concentration of another solution

Equipment:
Pipette
Burette
Flask

1) using a pipette add a set volume of the unknown alkali into a clear conical flask
2) add a few drops of indicator into the flask
3) fill the burette with the known acid
4) record the amount of acid added in the burette
5) slowly add the acid in the burette into the unknown alkali in the conical flask
6) swirl and stop adding when the neutralization reaction is complete (indicator colour change)
7) record the final volume
8) subtract the intial volume from the final volume, this gives the volume of the solution added (titre)
9) repeat experiment until you get consistent values for the titre and find the mean

Q

What is the formula linking moles, conc and vol

A

M
C V

Moles = conc x vol
Conc = mol/vol
Vol = mol/conc

Q

Known solution has…

A

Both volume and concentration
- this should be used to find moles, to help find conc of unknown
