Group 1 Elements Flashcards
What are the group 1 elements known as
Alkali metals
How do alkali metals react
React with non metals ( especially group 7) to form ionic compounds
- the metal gains a +1 charge from losing an electron
- ionic compounds are white solids that dissolve in water to form a colourless solution
Reacts with water and forms a metal hydroxide and hydrogen
How many electrons do their outermost shell have
1
What are trends in group 1
Become more reactive as you go down the group:
- as we go down the group, the atoms radius increases meaning the outer most shell and electron gets further away from the nucleus
- the increased distance weakens the attractive force making it easier for the electron to be lost
Increases boiling point as you go up the group
Property of group 1 elements
Low density unlike most metals
