Preperation Of Salts Flashcards
1
Q
What do acids react with to form soluble salts
A
- some metals
- insoluble bases: added to acid until no more will react, excess solid is filtered off
- alkalis: an indicator can be used to show when the acid and alkali have completely reacted produce a salt solution
2
Q
How are solid salts produced
A
Salt solutions can be crystallised
3
Q
How are insoluble salts made
A
- by mixing appropriate solutions of ions that a precipitate is formed
- precipitation can be used to remove unwanted ions like when treating water
Example: - Sodium iodide (NaI) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) are 2 soluble salts, so aqueous solution are formed
- add silver nitrate into sodium iodide and solid is formed
- this solid is a precipitate, an insoluble salt AgI (silver iodide)
- it is a displace reaction, the 2 products are NaNO3 and Agl
- the insoluble product is the precipitate
