Tissues And Integumantary System Flashcards
What is epithelial tissue?
Tissues that covers surfaces, epi=on
What are four types of tissue and what is their basic function?
Epithelial: covers exposed and internal passageways
Connective: connects organs, and bones
Muscle: movement tissue
Neural: tissue that is responsible for touch and sensitivity
Explain what it means that epithelial tissue has a high mitotic rate. How can this be dangerous?
It means it reproduces quickly, this can be harmful if skin cancer is developed because it will quickly reproduce cancerous cells.
How does tissue provide physical protection?
Protects us from bacteria entering in the body, protects our organs from being harmed and it protects us from the sun.
How is permeability controlled by the epithelium?
The epithelium tissues absorb some things and protect us from other substances such as chemicals. Icy Hot can be dangerous.
What is the function of villi and micro villi, where are you most likely to find this?
They increase area for increased absorption, this is found in the insets times to absorb nutrients.
What is the function of cilia? Where would it be found?
Cilia are the lining cells of our air passages, they are little hairs that trap particles. They would be found in our lungs to “sweep” up dirt and mucus.
What are common secretions from the epithelial tissue?
Ceruminous glands, sebaceous glands, suderiferous glands.
What does ceruminous glands secrete, where are they found?
They secrete cerumin “earwax”, they are found in the ear to protect from internal ear infections.
What do sebaceous glands secrete?
They secrete sebum, these are oils given off, they are found near hair follicles.
What do suderiferous glands secrete?
Sweat!
What is the basement membrane?
What the epithelial tissue tissue attaches to, connects epidermis to dermis.
What is the difference between simple and stratifies epithelium and give examples of where you would find each.
Simple: thin and fragile, lines the internal passageways like blood vessels and heart.
Stratified: several layers, any surface skin, or esophagus and mouth that can withstand abrasions.
What are fibroblasts?
They are stem cells of connective tissue they produce collagen.
What is collagen?
The most abundant type of connective tissue it is a protein.
What are glandular epithelial cells, what is heir function?
Anything that secretes! Hormones, sweat, oils ect.
What are the basic characteristics of all epithelial tissue?
Avascular; without blood, high mitotic rate, inside and outside, on surfaces.
Function of adipocytes
Fat cells, store energy and insulate the body
Function of Macrophages
White blood cells that eat bacteria when a wound is present, they are the cleaning system of our body.
What is the difference between tendons and ligaments?
Tendons -attach muscle to bone
Ligaments -attach bone to bone
Cutaneous
Dermis
Subcutaneous
Hypodermis
Synovial
Found in joint cavities, produce synovial fluid.
Cardiac
Involuntary muscles- heart
Skeletal
Around bones
Smooth
Lining organs
