A

80% of skeleton
Arranged in OSTEONS
Provides protection support and resists stress

14
Q

What is the difference between osteon and trabiculae?

A

Osteons are circular structures with the blood flowing in the middle
Trabiculae are porous structures that can absorb impact well

15
Q

What indicates unhealthy bones in a bone scan?

A

Bones absorb radioactive tracers such as barium that make bones show up in the bone scan
Too dark or splotchy =increased metabolism = likely cancerous cells
Too light = decreased metabolism likely degenerative bone disease

16
Q

Axial skeleton

A

Head, neck, trunk/spinal cord

17
Q

Appendicular skeleton

A

Upper and lower limbs, pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle

18
Q

What bone doesn’t articulate?

A

The hyoid, it’s a build up of cartilage that attaches the muscles of the mouth.

19
Q

What is the function of the sinus cavity?

A

Allows air to pass and make mucus drain

20
Q

What are fontanels? Why do they exist? How long do we have them?

A

Areas of cartilage connecting skull bones, “soft spots” on babies they fuse between ages 1-2

21
Q

Interstitial growth

A

Length

22
Q

Appositional growth

A

Width

23
Q

Endochondral growth

A

Bones starting to develop in babies mostly cartilage, grows with the epiphyseal plate

24
Q

How many bones are in a baby? Adult?

A

Over 300 in a baby, 206 in an adult

25
Q

How does this help with bone growth and development?

Ca,p,vitamin c

A

Good bone growth

26
Q

How does this help with bone growth and development?

Vitamin A

A

Osteoblast activity

27
Q

How does this help with bone growth and development?

Growth factor

A

Increase in length at the epiphyseal plate

28
Q

How does this help with bone growth and development?

Sex hormones

A

Increase osteoblast activity “growth spurt” pelvic size change

29
Q

Greenstick fracture

A

Incomplete, convex surface, bend in the bone

30
Q

Comminuated

A

Fracture is complete and fragments are shattered

31
Q

Transverse fracture

A

Complete break at a right angle

32
Q

Oblique fracture

A

Complete at an angle

33
Q

Spiral fracture

A

Twisting of the bone excessively

34
Q

Fissured fracture

A

Incomplete longitudinal break

35
Q

What is osteoporosis?

A

Holes in the bones, osteoclasts outnumber osteoblasts, women’s bone loss occurs 8% per decade while men occur 3% per decade.

36
Q

How will a bone heal itself?

A
  1. Hematoma- huge blood clot
  2. Internal and external callus formed
  3. External callus calcifies
  4. Everything calcifies marked by swelling, remodeling will reshape it
