Tissues Flashcards
Simple
simple squamous - thin membrane easily diffused through
simple columnar - high secretion, like stomach, or has cilia, like intestines
simple cuboidal - secretion and absorption, found in kidneys, pancreas, salivary glands
psuedostratified - simple columnar that appears stratified, found in airways and the fallopian tube
Stratified
keratinized epithelium - the most exterior layer of dead cells that have lost their cytoplasm but retain the protein keratin. water proof
translational epithelium - found in stretchy tissue, like uterus, bladder
important characteristics of cells in endocrine glands
produced steroids which are lipid soluble and cannot be stored in vesicles. therefore, these are produced on demand and the epithelial cells must have lots of mitochondria
what does the pituitary gland secrete?
growth hormones
parachyma define
distinctive or specific epithelial cells in different glands, like hepatocytes in liver and nephrons in kidneys
define ground substance
stuff in the ECF excluding elastin and collagen
things that are present in the ground substance
proteoglycans - mucous forming glycoproteins - directs the cells hyaluronic acid - lubrication loose connective tissue dense connective tissue - if it is regular, it will only stretch in 1 direction.
