Tissues Flashcards
Stratified columnar epithelium
multiple layers of column-shaped cells; protection and secretion; (ex. esophageal lining)
ciliated simple columnar
one layer of column-shaped cells with little hairs (cilia) on the exterior
the cilia help move fluid along the tissue’s surface.
stratified squamous epithelium
multiple layers or flat disc-like cells; protection; make up the epidermis
stratified cuboidal epithelium
multiple layers of cube-shaped cells; found in ducts, glands, and the male urethra
transitional epithelium
stretches and permits distension of urine; are throughout the urinary tract.
Connective tissue
fewer cells; binding and support, protection, insulation, transportation
made of water and organic molecules
Areolar Connective tissue
(loose tissue) wraps and cushions organs; widely distributed throughout the body
Adipose connective tissue
(fat tissue) insulation, protection, energy storage
Dense Irregular connective tissue
provides structural strength; stretchy; in digestive tract, dermis
Dense Regular connective tissue
connects the skeletal system; tendons/ligaments; withstands stress
Blood connective tissue
transportation; has liquid extracellular matrix
Bone connective tissue
movement, protection, structure; hard tissue
cartilage connective tissue
dense, flexible tissue, assists in movement
Muscle tissue functions
movement, posture, joint stabilization, heat generation
skeletal muscle tissue
striated and voluntary (ex. biceps and triceps)
