Tissue (True Membranes) Flashcards
What are membranes
Thin sheets of one or more tissues that lines body cavities or surface
What are functions of membranes
-anchors organs in place
-serves as barrier
-immunity
-secrete substances
What are the true membranes
Serous and synovial because it fits structural and functional definitions
What are the membrane-like structures
Mucous and cutaneous membrane, and they can perform many of the same functions
What do mucous membranes do
-lines the walls of hollow organs that open to the outside of body (respiratory passages, mouth, nose, digestive tract, reproductive tracts)
What does the cutaneous membrane do
-refers to the skin
-has keratinized stratified squamous epithelium aka epidermis (outer layer of skin)
-has deep layer of loose connective tissue and a deeper layer of dense irregular connective tissue aka dermis (inside layer of skin)
-dermis houses blood vessels; oxygen and nutrients diffuse up to avascular epidermis
What does synovial membrane do
It lines cavities that surround joints (knee or shoulder)
The outer layer has loose CT and dense irregular CT
The inner layer has synoviocytes that secretes synovial fluid (watery and slippery) which lubricates joints
