Tissue related terms Flashcards
serous fluid
any of various body fluids resembling serum, typically pale yellow or transparent
pleura
A thin layer of tissue that covers the lungs and lines the chest cavity
basement membrane
a thin layer located just outside the sarcolemma in muscle fibers, composed of proteins and polysaccharides
keratin
A type of protein found on epithelial cells, which line the inside and outside surfaces of the body
we have 20,000 per square inch
nail plate
a protective plate characteristically found at the tip of the finger (AKA “finger nail”), composed mostly of keratin
sudoriferous gland
exocrine glands that produce and secrete sweat onto the skin’s surface.
cutaneous receptor
sensory nerve endings in the skin that detect touch, temperature, pain, and other sensations
Dermis
The thick layer of connective tissue situated beneath the epidermis
Stratum corneum
Aka the horny layer. The outermost stratum is composed of 20-30 layers of dead keratinized cells that form a protective layer.
Stratum granulosum
Granular layer. Named for specialized granules in the keratinocytes that release a lipid secretion, which gives them their water resistant quality.
Senses vibration
Meissner’s corpuscles.
Pacinian corpuscles
Senses tissue distortion
Ruffini’s corpuscles.
Like a tree’s leaf canopy branches out from its trunk, so does this sensory receptor.
Synovial membranes
Line the fibrous connective tissue capsules found in the joints of a skeletal system.
We have 700 per square inch
Sudoriferous (sweat) glands
Langerhans cell
Immune cells that help skin protect the body from organisms that penetrate the superficial epidermis.
They are what give the spiny layer (stratum spinosum) it’s name
Nail bed
Skin and tissue under the nail
Cutaneous membrane
Epithelial tissue attached to connective tissue
Papillary region
The top layer of the dermis
Follicle
A small tube-like cavity where other structures grow
Hypodermis
The deepest layer of skin
Visceral layer
Covers organs and structures in the body
We have 100 per square inch
Hair follicles
Senses light touch
Markel cells
superficial fascia
A.K.A hypodermis or subcutaneous layer - attaches skin to the underlying tissues and organs
sebaceous gland
A.K.A. oil glands - secrete an oily or waxy fluid, keeps skin soft and pliable
arrector pili
small smooth muscle attached to hair follicle, contracts to raise hair when frightened or cold
peritoneum
serous membrane that lines and protects the organs in the abdominopelvic cavity
extensible
able to stretch
stratum lucidum
A.K.A. clear or glassy layer - present in areas of body with thickest skin (palms, fingertips, soles of feet) made of densely packed dead, flat cells
melanocyte
specialized cell, produces melanin (dark pigment) to protect skin from UV radiation damage
serous membrane
epithelial membrane found in the body cavities NOT open to external environment (thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities)
