Tissue engineering of the cornea Flashcards
What is the structure of the eye?
1) Outer fibrous tunic
2) Middle vascular tunic
3) inner nervous tunic
What does the outer fibrous tunic consist of?
1) corner: transparent, focuses light rays
2) sclera: white, protection and muscle attachment
What does the middle vascular tunic consist of?
1) Choroid: absorbs scattered light
2) Ciliary body: holds lens and aids in focusing
3) Iris: colored part of the eye, diaphragm of connective tissue and smooth muscle
What does the inner nervous tunic consist of?
retina
What are the five layers of the cornea?
1) epthelium
2) Bowman’s Layer
3) Stroma
4) Descemet’s Membrane
5) Endothelium
What is the ‘sixth’ layer of the cornea?
dua’s layer
- Tough, well-defined, acellular lining only about 10μm to 15μm thick
What is the role of retina?
contains photoreceptors
What are the five groups of neurons in the retina?
- direct impulses to brain: receptor cells, bipolar neurons, ganglion cells
- modify impulses: horizontal and amacrine cells
What is the macula lutea in the retina?
contains fovea centralis, region of sharpest vision
What is the optic disc in the retina?
: nerves and vessels leave the retina, lacks photoreceptors (blind spot)
What are the layers of the retina?
1) sclera
2) choroid coat
3) pigmented epithelium
4) receptor cells (rods and cones)
5) bipolar neurons
6) ganglion cells
7) nerve fibres
