TISSUE Flashcards
Simple epithelium
Single layer of cells.
Function: Diffusion, osmosis, filtration, secretion and absorption.
Pseudostratified epithelium
Appears to have multiple layers because cell nuclei lie at different levels. But it is really simple- as all cells rest of basement membrane.
Contains goblet cells.
Function: Secretes mucus
Stratified epithelium
Structure: two or more layers of cells.
Function: protect underlying tissues.
Squamous cells
Thin.
Allow for rapid passage of substances through them.
Cuboidal cells
Cube shaped.
Have microvilli at apical surface
Function: Secretion & absorption
Columnar cells
Column like.
Protect underlying tissue.
Secretion & absorption.
Transitional cells
Change shape.
Stretch and retract
