SKIN Flashcards
Layers of the skin
-Subcutaneous layer (technically not part of skin) -Dermis -Epidermis
Phases of deep wound healing
- Inflammatory phase - Migratory phase - Proliferative phase - Maturation phase
Functions of the skin
• Thermoregulation • Blood reservoir • Protection • Sensations • Excretion and absorption • Synthesis of Vitamin D
2 regions of the Dermis
• PAPILARY LAYER (Superficial portion) • RETICULAR LAYER ( Deeper portion)
Cells of the epidermis
- keratinocytes
- merkel cells
- melanocytes
- langerhans cells
Layers of the epidermis
- Stratum Corneum
- Stratum Lucidum
- Stratum Granusosum
- Stratum Spinosum
- Stratum Basal
Keratinocytes
Produce protine “keratin”- a fibrous protein that protects the skin and underlying tissue from abrasions, heat, microbes and chemicals.
Melanocytes
Produces pigment “melanin”. Contributes to skin colour and absorbes damaging ulta violet rays.
Langerhans cells
Arises from red bone marrow and migrates to epidermis. Participates in immune responces. Helps other cells of immune system to recognise invading microbes and destory them.
Merkel cells
Located in deepest layer of epidermis.
Detects touch and sensations.
