3
Q

Is a highly cellular tissue, meaning it is composed mostly of cells, with little matrix.

  • covers or lines parts of the body such as SKIN ( outside or the lining ) and DIGESTIVE TRACT ( on the inside)

Q

Single layer of flat cells

Usually forms
membranes where
filtration or exchange
occurs

Lines lungs and
capillaries

Q

Single layer of cube-like cells

  • Common in glands
    and their ducts
    *Forms walls
    of kidney tubules
  • Covers the ovaries

9
Q

*Single layer of tall cells that
fit closely together

*Often includes goblet cells,
which produce mucus

  • Lines digestive tract

10
Q

Single layer, but some
cells are shorter than
others

  • Often looks like a
    double cell layer
  • Sometimes ciliated,
    such as in the
    respiratory tract
  • May function in
    absorption or secretion
A

Pseudostratified
columnar

11
Q

Cells at the free edge are
flattened while cells close to
the basement membrane are
cuboidal or columnar

  • Found as a protective
    covering where friction is
    common

Locations
* Skin
* Mouth
* Esophagus

A

Stratified squamous

12
Q

Two layers of cuboidal cells

  • Stratified columnar
  • Surface cells are columnar, cells
underneath vary in size and shape
  • Stratified cuboidal and columnar
  • Rare in human body
  • Found mainly in ducts of large glands
A

Stratified cuboidal

Q

*Shape of cells depends
upon the amount of
stretching

  • Cells of the basal layer
    are cuboidal or columnar
    while those at the free
    surface vary
  • Lines organs of the
    urinary system Figure 3.17f

14
Q

one or more cells that secretes a
particular product – a secretion, which contains protein molecules in an aqueous fluid

15
Q

Two major gland types

A

Endocrine
Exocrine

19
Q

-Ductless

  • Secretions are hormones – diffuse into blood (which means inside)
A
  • Endocrine gland
20
Q
  • Empty through ducts to the epithelial surface
  • Include sweat and oil glands
A

Exocrine gland

21
Q

Found everywhere in the body
- Includes the most abundant and widely distributed tissues

Functions
*Binds body tissues together
*Supports the body
*Provides protection

A

Connective Tissue

22
Q

mostly water along
with adhesion proteins and polysaccharide molecules

A

Ground substance

23
*Bone cells in lacunae (cavities) *Hard matrix of calcium salts * Large numbers of collagen fibers * Used to protect and support the body
Bone (osseous tissue)
24
Most common cartilage
Hyaline Cartilage
25
Is extracellular material and it usually consist of fibers and fluids, gel or solid ground substance.
Matrix
26
3 main categories of Connective Tissue
1. connective tissue proper (loose and dense) 2. supporting connective tissue (cartilage and bone) 3. fluid connective tissue (blood)
27
A complex collection of fibers and cells. FUNCTIONS: Packing material or meshwork providing an internal framework or an external wrapping found between the dermis and muscle
Areolar Connective Tissue
28
Unusual as a connective tissue that it is highly cellular Functions * Insulates the body * Protects some organs * Serves as a site of fuel storage
Adipose tissue
29
has fibroblast and fibrocytes, as well as reticular fibers. These fibers are made of fine strands of collagen. Found in - Liver, spleen, and lymph nodes
Reticular connective tissue
30
collagenous tissue is found in tendons and ligaments and the parallel fibers have great tensile strength
Dense Regular Collagenous
30
This tissue is found in the deep layers of skin and the white of the eye
Dense Irregular Collagenous
