Time orientation & chronic illness L6 Flashcards
how is behaviour linked to chronic illness?
engagement in health risk behaviours like poor dietry choices, no excercise etc all greatly increase ones chances of developing NCD’s
according to Temporal self-appraisal theory, we hold ____ views towards our past self; Time is seen as a proxy for ____
Negitive; Growth
Describe one study which looked at temporal self appraisal.
Wilson & Ross - students told to rate versions of themselves from either a) start of the year = distant self b) start of the semester = proximal self. found more negative views towards the more distant self.
what are temporal landmarks
Important past events, serve as a landmark
people with chronic illness have perceptions of continuity over time. perhaps temporal distance is in actual fact _____
perceived self-change
Describe Sirosis et al
Sirosis - Online survey included an initial survey and then one 6 months later. sent to people with IBD and Arthritis (chronic illnesses). were asked to give self evaluations of either their recent (within 6 months) or distant (prior to 6 months) selfs, which were designed to induce temporal . also asked of any significant life events in peoples life.
Found no difference in self-views based on induced temporal distance. found a small significant difference in self-views between those who did and did not have a temporal landmark. suggest that temporal perspective doesn’t work but temporal landmarks do work in chronic illness populations
Discuss Sirosis, using Future self-related health (FSRH) and chronically ill patients
Sirosis - asked chronically ill people to rate future self-rated health and recorded other measures. found Fatigue explained 11-17% of the variance in FSRH scores, rose by 4% when agreeableness and neuroticism included, which was explained by optimism levels.
Describe Hall et al
Hall et al - looked at the importance of Time perspective measured by TPQ on weight management behaviour in newly diagnosed type II diabetics. found that TPQ was linked to both behavioural intentions to manage weight and directly to fatty food consumption. so Time perspective is important in the management of diabetes
how is procrastination linked to cvd, talk about sirosis et al
Sirosis - procrastination linked to low agreeableness and low conscientiousness, which are linked to CVD. gave an online survey out which measured procrastination (5 point scale) and risk of developing CVD. found that a 1 point increase
