Health psychology; changing health behaviour L2 Flashcards
what is motivational and volitional phase of behaviour change?
Motivational= forming new intention towards a health behaviour
Volitional= acting on new intention towards a health behaviour
Describe evidence using TPB as a behaviour change intervention.
Quinn - Leaflet based focused on changing intentions towards cycle helmet use in children. Found it was effective, making 25% of experimental group use helmets up to 5 months later.
Hardman - Literature review of papers using TPB as an intervention. Found small to medium effect sizes of intention on behaviour.
Webb & Sheeran - found medium to large intention change produces small to medium behaviour change. Found that of those who intended to change, 53% did and 47% did not; of those who did not intend to change, 7% did and 93% did not
Describe one way in which the intention-behaviour gap can be bridged.
Implementation intentions - this involves planning when where and how you will carry out your new behaviour.
Study - When implementation intention was done with breast self-examination, of those who intended to carry out behaviour ___% actually carried out behaviour.
100%
Outline how TPB can be used to help behaviour change
modifying the three cognitive components of attitudes, social norms and perceived behavioural control.
Outline how TTM can be used to help behaviour change in
when we know what stage people are in, we can tailor our intervention to help them progress to the next stage.
Describe evidence for using TTM to tailor interventions
Noah - did a meta-analysis comparing the efficacy of stage-tailored interventions compared to non-stage tailored interventions. found a small effect of tailored intervention (r=0.07)
Bridle - found limited effectiveness of stage based interventions for behaviour change
outline the criticisms of social cognitive models like HBM, TPB, TTM on health behaviour change.
Predictive power - best we have is around 50% (TPB) not quite good enough
Ignore important predictors - things like past behaviour and anticipated regret not involved in any models
Biology - pay no respect to the importance of biology on our behaviours
Cant change cognition - we still have no solid basis from which to change cognition
should we be trying - we are trying to change peoples thoughts, do we have the right?
Cant be falsified - [Ogden] we just observe, we cant falsify, as soon as we measure a cognition it changes.
