Q

Describe evidence using TPB as a behaviour change intervention.

A

Quinn - Leaflet based focused on changing intentions towards cycle helmet use in children. Found it was effective, making 25% of experimental group use helmets up to 5 months later.

Hardman - Literature review of papers using TPB as an intervention. Found small to medium effect sizes of intention on behaviour.

Webb & Sheeran - found medium to large intention change produces small to medium behaviour change. Found that of those who intended to change, 53% did and 47% did not; of those who did not intend to change, 7% did and 93% did not

Q

Outline how TTM can be used to help behaviour change in

A

when we know what stage people are in, we can tailor our intervention to help them progress to the next stage.

Q

Describe evidence for using TTM to tailor interventions

A

Noah - did a meta-analysis comparing the efficacy of stage-tailored interventions compared to non-stage tailored interventions. found a small effect of tailored intervention (r=0.07)

Bridle - found limited effectiveness of stage based interventions for behaviour change

Q

outline the criticisms of social cognitive models like HBM, TPB, TTM on health behaviour change.

A

Predictive power - best we have is around 50% (TPB) not quite good enough

Ignore important predictors - things like past behaviour and anticipated regret not involved in any models

Biology - pay no respect to the importance of biology on our behaviours

Cant change cognition - we still have no solid basis from which to change cognition

should we be trying - we are trying to change peoples thoughts, do we have the right?

Cant be falsified - [Ogden] we just observe, we cant falsify, as soon as we measure a cognition it changes.
