What is timbre?
The unique sound quality of an instrument
What is a synth?
Like a keyboard but you can create (synthesis) your own sounds
What is reverb?
An editing technique where you can alter the acoustic ‘space’ of a recording. eg- recording in a studio but making it sound like a church
What is delay?
Delaying the signal output to create an echo like effect
What is EQ (equalisation)?
Changing the balance of pitches in a recording: typically adjusting bass, middle and treble frequencies.
What is arco?
Playing a stringed instrument with a bow
What is pizzacato?
Playing a string instrument without the bow- plucking
What is a mute?
Used to dampen the sound of an instrument or make it sound more distant
What is falsetto?
Singing above your typical vocal range (head voice)
What is vibrato?
A technique used to add colour to a note (like a very controlled wobble with expression)
What is ‘p’?
Piano- soft
What is ‘pp’?
pianissimo - very soft
What is ‘mp’?
Mezzo piano- moderately soft
What is ‘mf’?
Mezzo forte- moderately loud
What is ‘f’?
Forte- loud/ strong
