What is a cadence?
The chords at the end of a musical phrase or piece
What is a perfect cadence?
Chord of V-I (dominant to tonic)
What is a plagal cadence?
Chord of IV-I (sub-dominant to tonic)
What is an imperfect cadence?
Any chord to V (any to dominant)
What is an interrupted cadence?
Chord of V-vi (dominant to sub-mediant)
What is tonal music?
Music with a particular key
What is atonal music?
Music without a key
What do we mean by major?
Full, bright, happy sounding music
What do we mean by minor?
Sad, dark, depressing music
What is a major chord?
A chord made up of root note- 3rd-5th
What is a minor chord?
A chord made up of root note- minor 3rd-5th
What is modal music?
Music that is neither major nor minor. Modal music tends to have a specific mood or atmosphere
What is a mode?
Modes came before scales- A mode is a specific set of pitches that must start on a specific pitch
What is a scale?
A specific pattern of tones and semi-tones that an start on any pitch

C major

F major ( 1 flat Bb)
What key has 2 flats?
Bb major (2 flats Bb+ Eb)
What key has 3 flats?
Eb major (3 flats Bb+Eb+Ab)

A change of key
What is the most common modulation?
Most common= to the dominant. Other common modulations: to the tonic minor, to the subdominant.
