Timber Manufacturing Flashcards
What are the timber manufactures?
- Routing
- Turning
- Laminating
- Steam Bending
- Kerfing
What is a router used for?
Can be used to shape, cut and create designs in wood. Different cutting tools can be used that have different profiles.
What is turning?
Pieces of timber are rotated and cutting tools are then used to shape the material.
What is laminating?
Thin strip of wood are glued together in a former. It is often used to create curved shapes and famously used in furniture design.
What is steam bending ?
Thicker pieces of timber can be bent if they are steamed first. The steam penetrates the timber fibres and temporarily softens them, allowing them to be formed.
What is kerfing?
Adding thin saw cuts into a thicker material, you can make it flexible, enabling you to make curved shapes.
What is the part that cuts for a router called?
Bits
What is a dado?
A channel cut into wood to make strong joints.
What is a rabbet?
A pattern cut into the edge of timber to make a joint.
What do round-over bits do to a sharp edge?
Round over bits turn a sharp edge into a smooth curve.
For turning what is the machine used to spin the wood?
A lathe
What is a lathe?
A machine that rotates a workpiece about an axis rotation to perform various operations.
What is the object that is used where the tools sit on?
The tool rest
What tools are generally used in turning to shape the wood?
- Bowel gouges
- Spindle gouges
- Skew chisel
- Parting tool
