What do stains do to wood when applied?
Stains when applied enhance or change the colour of the natural timber.
What do preservatives do to wood when applied?
Preservatives help repel water and moisture and in some cases help resist insect attacks.
What do varnishes do to wood when applied?
Varnishes achieve a similar finish look to polish, but gives better protection to the surface.
What do oils do to timber when applied?
Oils enhance the natural oils already in the wood.
What do paints do to timber when applied?
Paints give a solid colour finish to the surface of the wood- you cannot see the wood grain through it, if the surface is flat.
Why are finishes applied?
To:
- Increase durability.
- Protect from decay.
- Improve the look.
- Improve the working properties or performance.
What is tanalising?
Tanalising provides a long term protection against rot, fungal and insect attacks.
Why is it important to sand the grain of timber before applying a finish?
It is important because sanding ensures a smooth finish.
What is seasoning?
Seasoning is allowing the moisture content in the timber to reduce by leaving it to dry naturally by the air.
