Describe the uses of acrylic varnish?
Provides a hard, tough heatproof, waterproof finish. Clear finishes allows the grain of the wood to be seen through the finish.
Describe the uses of water-based paints?
Can provide both protection and colour. It can be used for both indoor and outdoor use. The paint makes the surface more aesthetically pleasing, tougher, harder and resistant to moisture.
Describe the uses of stains?
Used to help colour and enhance the grain. They do not have any specific protective qualities.
Describe the uses of colour wash?
Used to colour the wood while allowing the grain to show through. They can make timber look more aesthetically pleasing.
Describe the uses of wax?
Wax increases the surface hardness and toughness. It can be buffed to provide a high gloss finish and a clear finish can mean that the grain of the wood can be seen through.
Describe the uses of pressure treating?
-Wood is placed in a pressure vessel containing a solution of preservatives. The pressure forces the preservatives deep into the wood fibres. The wood is then steam dried.
-It helps to protect the wood for up to 50 years from rot, insect and fungal attack and weathering. It is great for outdoor applications.
Describe the uses of yatch varnish?
Suitable for woods that are outside for a long time. It increases toughness, hardness and weather resistance.
Describe the uses of Danish oil?
It maintains the natural appearance of the timber, it soaks into the wood and enhances the grain. It is not a very hardwearing finish but regular application can add some water resistance.
Describe the uses of teak oil?
Used on outdoor wood products to improve weather resistance and resistance to fungal and insect attacks. It is also aesthetically pleasing as the grain is enhanced.
