Max GM not to exceed 3% of the Breadth.
Can not load higher than 1/3 the breadth in Winter Zones.
What is Permeability?
Permeability of a space is the percentage of empty volume in that space.
Securing requirements for Timber on Deck?
Loose timber on deck?
Height of cargo 2.5m lashing must be 3m apart.
More than 2.5m high lashing must be 1.5m apart.
If trading in winter area cannot go more than 1/3 breadth of vessel.
Normal timber deck?
When uprights are at intervals not exceeding 3m. Must have lashings 3m apart.
Can all ships load timber?
Yes, but only ships loaded in accordance with the TDC may load to lubber lines.
Load as tightly as possible, min heights, secure in accordance with the timber deck code and cargo securing manual.
How high can you load timber to?
If less than 125m - min height to load to is the break of forecastle head.
If more than 125m - load to min height of 2.3m
Why should avoid large GM?
Higher the GM the larger the righting leaver. Resulting in a stiff ship.
Comes to the upright quicker may result in cargo loss.
What should you ensure when loading timber?
Lay out all lashings in position and inspect before loading.
Adequate visibility is maintained from the bridge.
Safe margin of stability is maintained.
Cargo does not over hang.
The max weight does not exceed load on hatch covers.
What should the officer check on the voyage?
Master must ensure proper weather routeing to avoid areas of bad whether and high swell.
If jettisoned report to nearest coast station.
Examine lashings prior to and after sailing.
Main concerns with timber?
Max GM State of weather for the voyage. Visibility - 2 ship lengths Sea spray - water absorption Lashed + secured correctly
