Define Manufactured Timber
It is wood pulp,chips or veneers and a bonding agent, such as glue or resin which is mixed together and put under great heat and pressure to form large sheets.
What is MDF?
A manufacture board that has a smooth,even surface but its structurally weak,its used mainly for furniture and interior panelling
What is plywood?
A very strong board which is constructed of layers of veneer or piles which are glued at 90 degrees to each other,this is used for boat building and exterior work
What is chipboard?
This is made from chips of wood glued together,used for kitchen and bedroom furniture, usually veneered or covered in plastic laminate.
What is Blockboard?
Similar to Plywood, but the central layer is made from strips of Timber,common for shelving and worktops
What is Hardboard?
This isa a very cheap particle board which sometimes has a laminated plastic surface,used for furniture backs.
Define Hardwood
Hardwoods come from broad-leaved ,deciduous trees which tend to grow in parts of the world that have a more temperate climate,they are slow growing and therefore expensive.
What is Beech?
A straight-grained hardwood with a fine texture,it is light in colour and very easy to work with,its used in furniture and toys
What is Oak?
A very strong wood which is light in colour and its very hard to work with,used for boats and high class furniture
What is Mahogany?
An easy to work wood,which is reddish brown in colour and very expensive,its commonly used for bars and shop fittings
What is Teak?
A very durable oily wood which is golden brown in colur and highly resistant to moisture and outdoor weather,used for outdoor furniture and boat building
What is Balsa?
A pale white to grey wood, it has a distinct velvety feel and it has exceptional strength to weight properties,used for light work such as model making
Define softwood
Softwoods come form coniferous trees,they are fast growing,and therefore cheaper than hardwoods
What is Scots Pine?
A straight-grained softwood but knotty,light in colour and fairly strong but easy to work with, this used for DIY and cheap quality furniture
What is Parana Pine?
Hard and straight-grained almost knot free,fairly strong and expensive,used for doors and staircases
