Metals Flashcards
What is the difference between Ferrous and Non-ferrous metals?
Ferrous metals contin iron and Non-ferrous metals do not
What is Cast iron?(ferrous)
Its a cheap but very heavy metal that are used in outdoor firniture and cookwear
What is Mild Steel?(ferrous)
Its a tough, ductile, malleable metal with good tensile strength, used for general purpose enginering
What is high carbon steel?(ferrous)
It is a brittle ferrous metal that has poor resistance to corrosion, used in cutting tools
What is Stainless Steel?(ferrous)
Hard, tough, ductile metal that is resistance to wear and corrosion, its most commonly used in cutlery and kitcheb utensils
What is Aluminium?(Non-ferrous)`
Aluminium is light, soft, ductile and a good conductor of heat and electricity, its usually used in kitchen equipment and window frames
What is copper?
Copper is mallwable, ductile and resistant to corrosion, used in water pipesand decorative goods
What is Tin?
Tin is soft, weak, malleable, ductile and resistant to corrosion, its usually used for coating steel to form tin-plate
Define a Metal alloy?
An alloy is an a mixture of metals, or a metal combined with one or more other elements.
What is Brass?
Brass is resistant to corrosion and a good conductor of heat and electricity, used for ornaments and water taps
What is Pewter?
Pewter has a low melting point and good casting properties, many years ago,it wad used fir tableware but now, decorative objects
What is Lead Soldier?
This has a low melting point and is a good electrical conductor, its used fir electrical soldering
What is Aluminium alloy?
This is light weight, ductile and is a good conductor of heat, used for engineering structures and aircraft
