Energy sources-renewable Flashcards

1
Q

Explain what solar energy is.

A

This is energy from sunlight that is captured in solar panels and converted into electricity. These create a potentially infinite energy supply whereas they can be costly.

Q

Explain what wind energy is.

A

This uses wind turbines to turn wind energy into electricity. These create a potentially infinite energy supply however, it can make rural areas look unattractive and ruin the scenery.

Q

Explain what is tidal energy is.

A

A renewable energy that uses a tidal barrage to force water through gaps to generate electricity. Tidal barrages can double as a bridge although, the construction of them can be very costly.

Q

Explain what is wave energy is.

A

This is where the movement of seawater in and out of a cavity on the shore compresses trapped air, driving a turbine. These are ideal for an island country, on the other hand, construction can be costly.

Q

Explain what is Geothermal energy is.

A

This is where cold water is pumped underground and comes out as steam, this steam can be used for heating or to power turbines creating electricity. These can create potentially an infinite energy supply however, they only work in areas of volcanic activity.

Q

Explain what is Hydroelectric energy is.

A

This is energy harnessed from the movement of water through rivers, lakes and dams. this creates water reserves, although, its costly to build.

7
Q

Explain what is biomass energy is.

A

This is where you use organic material(i.e. decaying plant or animal waste) which can then be burned to provide energy e.g. oil seed rape which produces oil. It is cheap whereas when burned it can give off greenhouse gases.
