Synthetic Fibres Flashcards
Define Synthetic Fibres
fibres made by humans through chemical synthesis, as opposed to natural fibres that are directly derived from living organisms. They are the result of extensive research by scientists to improve upon naturally occurring animal and plant fibres.
Describe the manufacturing processes involved when making Synthetic Fibres
Synthetic Fibres are all produced using extrusion processes, manufacturers begin with polymer solution or melted pellets of polyester or a similar synthetic fibre, this solution is placed in a tank above a spinneret. The spinneret is a metal extrusion plate that contains tiny holes.
What is Nylon?
Nylon is a strong, durable, lustrous and lightweight material, its used for seat belts and tents
What is Polyester?
It is a durable, crease resistant material that is resistant o stretching/shrinking
What is Acrylic?
A quick drying, easy to wash material that retains it shape and is water resistant, its used for fleeces and ski jackets
What is Viscose?
Its soft, comfortable, very absorbent, biodegradable and easily dyed, its used in sportswear and blouses
What is Elastane?
Elastane is non-absorbent,resistant to chemicals and quick drying, used for swimwear and tights
What is Acetate?
It has a luxurious appearance, soft handle and it dyes well and is fast drying, its used in clothing, bags and soft furnishings
