Tides And Currents Flashcards
Olympia tide
Mean- 10.5ft
Diurnal- 14.4ft
Free floating logs
Be cautious of free floating logs and semi submerged deadheads or sinkers especially during freshets, after storms or unusually high tides
VTS tidal broadcast
VTS Will provide a tidal broadcast when tides are predicted to exceed 10ft in Seattle. When tide exceeds 10ft in Seattle vsls should proceed at a safe speed to minimize the risk of wake damage
Narrows current
Velocities can exceed 5kts at time. At the N end of the narrows the current sets N most of the time on the E side of the passage and S most of the time on the W side
Hale pass current
Attains velocity in excess of 3kts at time. The Ebb is stronger than the fld
Pitt pass current
Between key peninsula and McNeil island, connects drayton pass and care inlet. Only pass E of McNeil island is used by small craft with local knowledge. In this pass the ebb sets to the north and is stronger then the fld. Attains velocity of 2.5kts or more at time
Drayton pass current
Estimated current velocities of 1-2 kts occur at the Sw end of the pass
Steilacoom current
Tide rips occur in vicinity and can be dangerous to small craft
Pickering pass current
Fld sets from case inlet toward hammersly inlet and the ebb in the opposite direction. Strongest currents are near the S end where velocities reach 2.5kts at times
Peale pass current
Velocity can attain 2kts in narrow part of pass. Fld sets N and Ebb S
Dana pass current
Currents frequently attain velocities of 3kts or more
Squaxin pass
Tide rips can occur. Usual velocity is about 1.5kts
