Tibia Flashcards

1
Q

3 common sites of tibial stress fractures

A

TOP: caudolateral cortex proximally

MIDDLE: mid-shaft caudolateral cortex

BOTTOM: caudomedially or laterally distally

Can be bilateral

Scintigraphy is the dx test of choice <50% will have radiographic evidence even if repeated in 2 weeks

Q

Most common tibial fracture configuration in foals? How is this thought to occur?

Where is the implant placed for repair of this fracture?

A

SHII fracture of the proximal tibial physis. Metaphyseal fragment located on the LATERAL side

Occurs dt trauma eg foal attempts to stand with upper limb trapped, mare stands on distal limb or direct trauma to physis.

Trauma to the lateral aspect of the physis exherts bending force - fracture line opens on medial side → tracks laterally then deviates through the metaphysis to create a lateral metaphyseal fragment

Implant (LCP pref) placed MEDIALLY on the proximal tibia
