Thyroiditis, sporadic and endemic goiter Flashcards
Hashimoto thyroiditis
Most occur in women of 60-70 years. An autoimmune reaction. Early phase of hyperthyroidism before the hormone decreases. An enlarged and non-tender goiter due to lymphatic and plasma cell invasion
Subacute (deQuervain) granulomatous thyroiditis
Occurs more in females than males. It is a painful goiter with focal destruction, due to granulomatous inflammation. Viral etiology (associated with mumps, coxsackie virus). Self limiting.
Reidel fibrosing thyroiditis
Occurs more in females than males. Autoantibody destruction of gland resulting in atrophy and fibrous replacement of the gland
Post partum thyroiditis (PPT)
Occurs right after giving birth due to the adjustment of the immune system
Endemic goiter
Occurs in areas associated with iodine deficiency in high frequency. This can be areas where no seafood is being eaten.
Sporadic goiter
Occurs in non-deficient areas
