What is primary hypothyroidism caused by?
A
Thyroid failure and inability to produce thyroid hormones (common)

What is secondary hypothyroidism caused by?
A
Failure to produce TSH (rare), usually part of complete pituitary failure

What does 1ary hypothyroidism tend to be caused by?
A
- Usually autoimmune
- Can be drug induced

What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism?
A
- Weakness and dry skin
- Cold and decreased sweating
- Impaired memory
- Constipation
- Weight gain
- Hair loss

How can hypothyroidism be diagnosed?
A
Static test of thyroid function. There is no negative feedback, TSH is increased in an attempt to stimulate the thyroid

A
Thyroid hormone replacement tablets (cheap)
